Logistics and supply are the lifeblood of any military organization and the Ohio Military Reserve is no different. We have to ensure that our soldiers are properly provisioned and equipped so they carry out their missions to support our citizens in times of crisis and need.
The Logistics Support Specialist serves in the Brigade or Battalion S-4 (Supply and Logistics) Section and provides support to the Logistics Officer, who is the principal staff officer for all matters concerning supply and logistics activities. Higher ranking Logistics Support Specialists will assist the Logistics Officer in the preparation of sustainment plans, orders, and other staff responsibilities and may supervise members of the S-4 Section staff. This position requires critical thinking, attention to detail, and excellent decisionmaking and problem-solving skills. Depending upon the specific role assigned, the Logistics Support Specialist may be an enlisted member, or a warrant officer or commissioned officer.
Duties associated with this position may include, but are not limited to:
• Assisting the Logistics Officer in risk management evaluation and mitigation that is associated with the activities of the S-4 Section • Providing support to the Brigade or Battalion engineering activities • Working with the Logistics Officer to support the work of the Food Service Officer, the State of Ohio Defense Forces (OHSDF) J-4, and the Brigade and OHSDF Comptrollers for acquisition of necessary stocks and supplies, along with other organizational supplies as required • Assisting the Logistics Officer with maintenance of the Brigade or Battalion Property Book and ensure that proper receipts, inventory, and records are maintained on State of Ohio and organizational property assigned to the OHMR • Assist with providing available support to the S-4 sections at the Major Subordinate Commands, as requested. Battalion Logistics Support Specialists will assist with providing available support to the supply sections at their subordinate companies, as requested • The Logistics Support Specialist may be called upon to assist the Logistics Officer with conducting audits of subordinate unit logistics sections • Other responsibilities of the Logistics Support Specialist may include, but are not limited to – Monitoring and analyzing the readiness status of equipment; Ensuring proper maintenance and repairs are conducted on equipment and facilities; Coordinating the requirements, requisition, acquisition, and storage of all classes of supply, except medical; Situationally identifying transportation needs and working with the Logistics Officer to coordinate the acquisition of transportation assets; Identifying field and garrison sanitation and cleaning needs and coordinating the acquisition of necessary supplies; Issuing uniforms and equipment to soldiers, as available; Working with the Brigade and OHSDF Comptrollers to procure medals, ribbons, devices, and accoutrements, as needed; Determining overall supply requirements.
