The Governor of the State of Ohio is the commander-in-chief of the Ohio Organized Militia, which consists of the Ohio Army and Air National Guard, and the State Defense Forces, and as such, has the authority to activate the Ohio Organized Militia to support and assist local authorities during state emergencies or for homeland defense.

The adjutant general is a member of the governor’s cabinet and is responsible for the command of the Ohio Army National Guard, Ohio Air National Guard, and State Defense Forces. The adjutant general supervises the heads of these components in the day-to-day operation and management of the readiness, fiscal, personnel, equipment, and real property resources of the agency.

Brigadier General (OH) Larry M. Pinkerton, Jr., Commander, State Defense Forces of Ohio

The Commander of the State Defense Forces reports directly to The Adjutant General of Ohio and is responsible for command and oversight of the operation and management of the readiness, fiscal, personnel, equipment, and real property resources of the Ohio Military Reserve, the Ohio Naval Militia, and the Ohio Cyber Reserve.

Colonel (OH) Deano L. McNeil Commander, 4th Civil Sustainment and Support Brigade, Ohio Military Reserve

The Commander of the 4th CSSB, Ohio Military Reserve (OHMR), reports directly to the Commander of the State Defense Forces of Ohio and is responsible for ensuring that soldiers of the OHMR are properly trained, equipped, and prepared to conduct a variety of assigned missions in support of military and civil authorities during natural or man-made disasters or emergencies, as directed by order of the Governor of the State of Ohio.
