Staff Judge Advocate

The Staff Judge Advocate (SJA) plays a vital role within the Ohio Military Reserve, serving as the principal legal advisor to command staff and personnel throughout the organization. Tasked with upholding the highest standards of legal compliance and ethical conduct, the SJA provides expert guidance on a diverse array of military law matters, ensuring the unit operates within the bounds of federal, state, and military regulations. The SJA facilitates the effective functioning of the Ohio Military Reserve by offering comprehensive legal support, fostering a culture of compliance and integrity, and safeguarding the rights and interests of military personnel and their families. This might be an interesting pro bono position for the new attorney, perhaps with an interest in military law, seeking experienced, or for the established attorney who desires to give back to the community.

Summary of Duties:

Legal Guidance: Provide legal advice and guidance to command staff, officers, and enlisted personnel on a wide range of military and administrative law matters.

Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with federal, state, and military regulations, including laws governing military operations, personnel management, and administrative procedures.

Legal Assistance: Offer legal assistance services to military personnel and their families, including drafting wills, powers of attorney, and providing counsel on personal legal matters.

Training and Education: Develop and conduct legal training programs for military personnel to enhance their understanding of military law, regulations, and procedures.

Review and Drafting: Review and draft legal documents, including contracts, memoranda, and policies, to ensure accuracy, legality, and compliance with applicable regulations.

Investigations and Litigation Support: Provide support for investigations and legal proceedings, including conducting legal research, preparing case materials, and representing the unit in legal matters.

Ethical Guidance
: Offer guidance on ethical issues, conflicts of interest, and professional conduct to ensure adherence to military ethics and standards of behavior.

Collaboration: Collaborate with other military legal offices, government agencies, and legal professionals to coordinate legal services, share best practices, and address complex legal issues.

Policy Development: Assist in the development and implementation of unit policies and procedures related to legal matters, ensuring consistency with military regulations and standards.

Risk Management: Identify legal risks and vulnerabilities within the organization and develop strategies to mitigate potential legal liabilities.

Command Advisement: Serve as a trusted advisor to unit leadership on legal matters, providing insights and recommendations to support informed decision-making.

Brigade Personnel and Administration Officer (S-1)

Do you have a background working as a Personnel and Administration Officer in one of the federal uniformed services, or the National Guard? Would you have an interest in doing volunteer service as a state military officer? If so, the Ohio Military Reserve is seeking an interested and qualified person to service as our Brigade S1, Personnel and Administration Officer. This is a critical position that will be based at Ohio Military Reserve Headquarters, in Columbus, Ohio.

The Personnel and Administration Officer (S-1) is the principal staff officer for all matters concerning human resources support and manpower management. The S-1 also serves as the senior adjutant general officer in the command. Specific responsibilities of the S-1 include manning, personnel services, personnel support, and headquarters management. The S-1 has coordinating staff responsibility for the equal opportunity advisor.

The Personnel and Administration Officer is charged with four primary tasks, including manning the force, providing human resources services, coordinating personnel support, and administrative management of the brigade headquarters.

Brigade Logistics Officer (S4)

Are you a former military leader who has a background and interest in supply and logistics? If so, the Ohio Military Reserve may have an opportunity for you! Logistics and supply are the lifeblood of any military organization and the Ohio Military Reserve is no different. We have to ensure that our soldiers are properly provisioned and equipped so they carry out their missions to support our citizens in times of crisis and need.

We are currently seeking a Brigade Logistics Officer (S-4) who will serve as the principal staff officer for all matters concerning supply and logistics activities. The Logistics Officer is involved in the preparation of sustainment plans, orders, and other staff writing and supervises members of the S-4 staff. This position requires critical thinking, and excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills.

The duties of the Brigade Logistics Officer will include:

  • Serving as the brigade commander’s principal advisor on issues pertaining to supply and logistics.
  • Oversight of risk management functions associated with the activities of the S-4 Section.
  • Providing oversight to engineering activities.
  • Working with the Food Service Officer to ensure adequate sustenance for soldiers both in the field and in garrison. The Logistics Officer will work with the Food Service Officer, the OHSDF G-4, and the Brigade and OHSDF Comptrollers for acquisition of necessary stocks and supplies, along with other organizational supplies as required.
  • Responsibility for the maintenance of the Property Book and ensuring that proper receipts and records are maintained on State of Ohio and organizational property assigned to the OHMR.
  • The Logistics Officer may be called upon to conduct audits of subordinate unit logistics sections.

Other responsibilities of The Logistics Officer include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring and analyzing the readiness status of equipment.
  • Ensure proper maintenance is conducted on equipment and facilities.
  • Directing and managing the operation of the network to ensure network and information system availability and information delivery.
  • Coordinate the requirements, requisition, acquisition, and storage of all classes of supply, except medical.
  • Identify transportation needs and coordinate the acquisition of transportation assets.
  • Identify field and garrison sanitation and cleaning needs and coordinate the acquisition of necessary supplies.
  • Issue uniforms and equipment to soldiers, as available.
  • Work with the Brigade and OHSDF Comptrollers to procure medals, ribbons, devices, and accoutrements, as needed.
  • Determine overall supply requirements

The Staff Judge Advocate positions require attorneys who are licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio, without restriction. It can be an entry level professional services officer position.

The Brigade Personnel and Administration Officer and Logistics Officer position are not entry level positions. The successful candidates must have prior federal active or reserve military service, or National Guard military service, or service with a state defense force at a pay grade from O3 to O5 and have been honorably discharged or granted an honorable retirement; or, they must be an internal OHMR candidate between the grades O3 and O5 who meet the qualification requirements for this position. Branch qualification is desirable. Civilian experience in either area may be substituted. Qualified internal candidates are encouraged to express their interest for consideration through their chain of command.
