Summary:

The Historian for the Ohio Military Reserve (OHMR) is responsible for preserving, documenting, and promoting the history and heritage of the OHMR. This role involves researching historical records, maintaining archives, and producing publications and presentations that highlight the significant contributions and events related to the OHMR. The Historian works closely with the Archivist and Public Affairs Officer, alone with other unit members to ensure that the legacy of the OHMR is accurately recorded and celebrated.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Research and Documentation:
    • Conduct thorough research on the history of the OHMR, including its formation, missions, key events, and notable personnel.
    • Collect and catalog historical documents, photographs, artifacts, and other relevant materials.
    • Maintain an organized and accessible archive of historical records and materials.
  2. Historical Publications and Presentations:
    • Prepare and publish historical articles, reports, and newsletters that detail significant events and contributions of the OHMR.
    • Create informative and engaging presentations for internal and external audiences, including military personnel, community groups, and educational institutions.
    • Develop and maintain a comprehensive history of the OHMR, including an annual historical summary.
  3. Heritage Preservation:
    • Work to preserve the heritage and traditions of the OHMR by organizing commemorative events and activities.
    • Advise the Commanding Officer and other unit members on matters related to historical preservation and heritage.
    • Collaborate with museums, historical societies, and other organizations to promote the history of the OHMR.
  4. Educational Outreach:
    • Develop educational programs and materials that highlight the history and role of the OHMR.
    • Conduct historical tours, lectures, and workshops for military personnel and the public.

  5. Advisory Role:
    • Serve as the subject matter expert on all historical matters related to the OHMR.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in History, Military History, Archival Studies, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent experience in military history or archival management may be considered.
  • Experience: Previous experience in historical research, archival management, or a related field. Military experience or familiarity with military history is highly desirable.
  • Skills:
    • Strong research and analytical skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Proficiency in archival management and digital cataloging systems.

This role involves managing the archives to ensure that the rich history of the OHMR is preserved for future generations. The Archivist works closely with the Historian, the Public Affairs Officer, and other unit members to maintain an accurate and comprehensive record of the OHMR’s activities and contributions.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Collection Management:
    • Acquire, appraise, and accession records, documents, photographs, and artifacts related to the OHMR.
    • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the systematic collection and maintenance of archival materials.
  2. Organization and Preservation:
    • Catalog and index archival materials to ensure they are easily accessible.
    • Utilize archival best practices to preserve documents and artifacts, including proper storage techniques and environmental controls.
    • Digitize records and materials to enhance accessibility and preservation.
  3. Access and Retrieval:
    • Develop and maintain an archival database to facilitate the efficient retrieval of records and materials.
    • Assist researchers, military personnel, and the public in accessing archival materials.
    • Respond to requests for information and provide guidance on the use of archival resources.
  4. Outreach and Education:
    • Collaborate with the Historian and the Public Affairs Officer to develop exhibits, presentations, and publications that highlight the history of the OHMR.

  5. Records Management:
    • Advise the commanders of the major subordinate commands, the Brigade Personnel and Administration Officer, and the Brigade Commander on records management practices to ensure the proper retention and disposition of current records.
    • Work with unit members to identify and transfer historically significant records to the archives.
  6. Policy Development:
    • Develop and implement archival policies and procedures in line with professional standards and best practices.
    • Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards related to archival management and access.
    • Advise the Commander on all issues pertaining to records management and storage

Qualifications:

  • Education: A degree in Archival Studies, Library Science, History, or a related field is preferred. A working knowledge and understanding of Ohio’s Public Records Law is essential.
  • Experience: Previous experience in archival management, records management, or a related field. Familiarity with military archives or history is a plus.
  • Skills:
    • Strong organizational and cataloging skills.
    • Proficiency in archival software and database management.
    • Excellent research and analytical skills.
